Born in Yorkshire, Brian Lawrenson  was brought up in South Africa. He spent his childhood in the seaside city of Port Elizabeth. He attended the Grey High School and is an Old Grey boy.
He met his New Zealand born wife, Jill, in London, where he lived for four years. After hitch-hiking around the British Isles and Europe, in 1968 they married and migrated to Australia. Brian retired, after a career in sales and marketing in computer technology, in 2000.
Brian and Jill live in their favourite city - Sydney. They have an apartment in the wonderful suburb of Breakfast Point. Ironically, Breakfast Point is one of Sydney's newest suburbs yet it's naming goes back to a visit by Captain Hunter three days after the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove on 26th January 1788, making it one of Sydney's earliest landmarks.
Brian and Jill's first real adventures started in the 1980s with three trekking trips to the Himalayas, a trip to the High Canadian Arctic and a three months long overland trip from Istanbul to Kathmandu and to Tibet. Since then, Brian and Jill have travelled every continent and visited over 70 countries, often drawn to remote places. They've stayed in hotels with and without stars, climbed lots of mountains, explored many cities, met wonderful people, walked many beautiful beaches and taken time out to enjoy spectacular sunsets - and had a number of life changing experiences.
Brian's interests include: Genealogy, sailing, trekking, photography and travelling. He is a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies, a London based society of Genealogists.Â
He also has an amazing collection of hats. Do you like the one he's wearing in the photograph. Its from Khiva in Uzbekistan.
Brian is a member of the Rotary Club of Breakfast Point, its charter President and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International in 2005 for his work in the community. Part of the proceeds from the sale of his book goes to support programs run by Rotary International.
